Child labor.....check!

E-mail Print PDF
The Youth Brigade
Wow we knocked out a huge amount of new trail yesterday...and that was with a small workcrew of four guys (Ben, Carlton, Russell, and myself). For a while there I thought maybe we're finally just getting that dang good at this trail building thing we do every weekend, would make sense after-all right? Then I realized the real secret might be child labor, which I'm pretty sure is still legal in The South. We're all getting decrepitly old you know so it's good to have a few kids out there to boss around while I'm busy doing nothing. Next time I'm bringing a lounge chair and a bullhorn! Thanks Ben and Russell for donating your kids to the great experiment! Okay we didn't work them too hard but they definitely kept busy, I was impressed. We all worked at John Henry pace to finish the new loop but came up about 300 feet short when we ran out of steam. Next week it'll be complete though, well complete enough to ride. We still have a good bit of hole filling and other dirt work to do and still have to design a different entrance as the current one is not great. We did manage to actually route an easy climb out of the loop at the end, really an easy climb at Poston...now that's a first!

Dirt don't hurt!

Dirt Work

Nothing adds fun to the trail like a nice dirt work session and that’s exactly what went down on Saturday at Poston. While Carlton and I scouted out and marked the next section of trail to be cut Calvin, John, Kevin, Russ, and the youth brigade added some jumps and berms to the newest downhill which we cut in last week. Should add a whole new feel to this section of trail! Expect to see a lot more of this going forward as the whole trail system could use a lot more dirt features. This newest loop of trail is almost complete, we should knock it out next week. It’s looking like it will add right at a half mile of trail altogether so we’re getting back our mileage steadily!

Another successful Saturday at Poston!

McLeod & Proud

It was another great morning of trail work at Poston as we added a good quarter mile+ of trail with just five workers. There is not a lot of flat(ter) land in those woods and a strong session of "rake-and-ride" is a nice switch from the typical physically intensive bench work we are used to out there. I wouldn't trade the terrain at Poston for anything but it does lead to a bit of love/hate. Love to ride it, hate to build it. Days like today will spoil you, good thing they're few and far between out in the hills of Poston Park's woods. Thanks to Ben, Blair, John, and Thomas(Blair Jr.) for coming out and helping this morning!

More trail scouted and flagged...

Flagging work at Poston Park

Last Sunday afternoon more future trail was marked/flagged at Poston Park as we continue to add mileage and grow Poston Trail back to the distance we had before the lake project commenced. This particular work is occurring in and around the old (and still usable) Spencer Mountain Loop. Getting this flagging work done allows our volunteers to get out there and work even if they can't make the typical weekend group trail work sessions. By spring ridership should be back up on the trail and hopefully we will have at least 8 miles of singletrack back in place!
